Quitman board moves to adjudicate multiple properties in code-enforcement sweep

Code-enforcement officer Teresa Hair presented a series of long-running nuisance and unsafe-structure cases to the Quitman City Equipment Board on March 3 and asked the board to authorize adjudication for multiple properties.
For 118 East Franklin Hair said the property shows roof/structural damage and recommended adjudication; the board approved a motion to adjudicate. Hair likewise presented photos and background for 104 Main Street (structural problems and a shared wall), 307 Pine Circle, Shadowwood Apartments (long-term vacancy and boarding up), and 504 Thompson Avenue (partial fire damage). Where owners had shown progress, the board gave 30 days for remediation; where the problems were ongoing the board voted to adjudicate.
"If anybody's willing to move forward with that property and adjudication, I need a motion to adjudicate the property," Hair said when presenting 118 East Franklin. The motions passed as recorded and the board directed staff to begin the adjudication process and prepare documentation for potential enforcement or sale discussions in executive session where appropriate.
The board emphasized the aim of code enforcement is to prompt cleanup and remediation and avoid creating hardship for homeowners where possible; staff will return with updates and any related legal steps.
