Public works staff told the Quitman City Equipment Board March 3 that a stretch of covered culverts running from Dogwood to an open ditch is failing and may require replacement. Jonathan Tanner estimated the immediate replacement cost for the stretch near 212 Dogwood to be about $8,000 and framed the decision as weighing city expense against homeowner convenience.
"It'd be about $8,000 in culverts to replace that from the intersection to where it is currently," Tanner said. He outlined options including city-funded replacement, homeowners buying covers with city installation, or converting to open ditches that typically drain better but are less convenient for homeowners.
Board members discussed permitting homeowners to purchase covers that the city would install and highlighted potential grant support through local representatives and programs (Pat Harrison and Danny Box were named as potential contacts). The board asked staff to offer transparent choices to affected homeowners and to explore possible grant funding before committing larger city dollars.
No final funding appropriation was approved at the meeting; the board directed staff to follow up with homeowners and to investigate grant options.
