Commission reviews $186,000 estimate to restore historic hand pump, urges public access

David, chair of the Bridgewater Historical Commission, told members that a contractor gave a rough restoration estimate of about $186,000 for the Osama Quinn hand pump and that the proponent (to be confirmed) intends to move the project forward. "He's got a rough estimate of a $186,000," David said, and asked the commission to insist that any restoration guarantee public access to the artifact.

Members pressed that access be a condition of recommending the project. One commission member said, "I see no reason to spend that kind of money if it isn't gonna be accessible to the residents of Bridgewater." The group discussed display options — keeping the pump visible in a fire station equipment bay, a larger lobby in a future station, or hosting the restored pump at public events — and debated insurance and liability limits that could prevent firefighters from pulling the pumper in a parade.

Commissioners proposed alternatives to in-person parade displays, including towing the pumper with a four-wheeler ("quad") and producing a documentary-style restoration video for YouTube and the town website so teachers and residents could access the history. David said the Conrads plan to donate a couple of memoir copies to the Bridgewater Public Library and that he will submit a preliminary application to the Community Preservation Committee (CPC) and circulate a revised letter to members before the CPC meeting.
