Architects show board exterior designs for new elementary and State Road addition; board generally approves materials

Nathan Dirks of Bray Architects presented exterior material samples and renderings for the new elementary school and the State Road Elementary addition, asking the board for feedback that would allow the design team to proceed into final design. Dirks explained the primary palette: traditional red brick as the main material, cast stone at grade and fiber‑cement panels as a lighter, sustainable accent. He said the fiber‑cement panels come with warranties that cover hail ("I believe it's 25 years") and are easier to replace than brick if damaged.

Board members asked about long‑term aging of materials, potential cost differences between metal and brick, bus and parent drop‑off logistics and whether historically significant elements of the old building could be salvaged. Dirks said some historic elements may be salvageable (date stone, floorboards) and that Habitat for Humanity could receive salvaged materials where feasible. The board expressed general approval of the materials and color selections, noting that approved exterior palettes will inform upcoming value engineering and bid alternates.
