Board endorses county cylinder-recycling contract for town transfer station

The Board of Selectmen reviewed a public works memorandum and approved a collective site services agreement under the Solid Waste Authority (SCARA) model to accept and recycle certain gas cylinders. Public works staff (Gary) explained the program mimics regional arrangements for mattresses and paint and requires little town effort beyond placing and monitoring 55-gallon drums for collected cylinders.
Gary said contractors will package cylinders, verify they are gas-free and recycle the metal. He told the board the program "costs the town nothing" because manufacturers or extended-producer arrangements cover the processing. He clarified the program does not include standard grill tanks (those will continue to be handled by a separate vendor) and that some small cartridges (SodaStream) must be handled via a manufacturer phone number rather than via the town program.
Selectmen asked about expected volumes; Gary said the town lacks historical counts but estimated staff currently call for pickups when drums are about three-quarters full and that public inquiries are infrequent — roughly five to ten requests per year at present. The board voted to authorize the agreement and directed staff to maintain records of collected cylinders for reporting and contractor invoicing.
