Rural Hall mayor defends council's resolution backing annexation strategy for proposed data center

The mayor opened the meeting with a detailed defense of the council's recent action supporting a revised proposal tied to a proposed hyperscale data center near Rural Hall. He said the council's vote was intended to protect the town's long-term financial interests if the project proceeds and is approved by Forsyth County, stressing the town does not have the legal authority to approve land use.

"The council's action was not an approval of the project," the mayor said, adding the resolution sought to ensure that if a project moves forward the town would receive the tax base associated with that development. He told residents the council had considered public comment, information from multiple sources and stakeholder meetings over several months before arriving at its decision.

The mayor repeatedly urged civility, saying the council respected differing viewpoints and would continue to engage with county officials and the developer to mitigate impacts if the project proceeds. He flagged fiscal risk if the county approved the project without annexation: the town could see increased service demands but receive little or no municipal property tax revenue.

Council members echoed the call for facts and site visits, noting they had toured other communities with data centers to evaluate visual, noise and infrastructure effects. The mayor and council pointed attendees to forthcoming county proceedings as the next formal step in land-use decision-making and encouraged residents to submit concerns during the county review.
