Board approves purchase of 5,500 tons of road salt to boost winter stockpile

The City of Lorain Board of Control on July 15 approved a Streets Division request to purchase sodium chloride for roadway treatment from Cargill under ODOT contract 018-27, for an amount not to exceed $400,000, funded from various 6400.2800 Salt Supplies accounts.
City staff told the Board the municipality typically uses about 3,500 tons of road salt annually but consumed about 5,200 tons last winter due to heavy snowfall and ice. To avoid shortages experienced by neighboring jurisdictions, the city plans to purchase 5,500 tons for the upcoming season. Mayor Jack Bradley moved the approval and Safety/Service Director Rey Carrion seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
The purchase follows Council authorization via Ordinance 056-26 on April 20, 2026, and staff said the larger purchase is intended to maintain winter operations and resident safety should another severe season occur.
