Resident says town removed and destroyed historic awnings, asks for records and compensation

Carol Newsome, a property owner in the town's historic district, told the council she attempted to buy a set of awnings from the old fire department building before demolition. Newsome said she was first told by public-works staff that the awnings might be available and later said Town Manager Homer Dearman told her the town would take them down and give them to her. She said the awnings were later discovered cut and destroyed and that she had photos showing town staff activity at the demolition.
"These awnings were worth over $2,000," Newsome said. She described a sequence of requests and meetings and said town staff, including Jason Hill and Homer Dearman, were involved in decisions about the old station's surplus property. She said she had submitted a public-records request and wanted the council to explain why the awnings were removed and destroyed and whether she should be compensated.
Council members listened and acknowledged receipt of her materials. Town staff did not announce a final finding or compensation decision during the meeting; Newsome said she would provide the council with additional documentation.
