Board approves applications for DCJS safety personnel and DOE security grants and SRO MOU

Mr. Lynch presented two grant applications and Mr. Ledge presented an SRO memorandum of understanding. The DCJS School Safety Personnel Grant would fund a division safety coordinator to oversee safety programs, threat-assessment compliance, audits and liaison duties; staff estimated a maximum local match of $38,000 based on the composite index.
"This funding would allow us to hire a division safety coordinator," Mr. Lynch said, explaining responsibilities that would include reviewing crisis plans, drills and coordinating with law enforcement, fire and EMS. The board moved and approved the request to apply.
Mr. Lynch then reviewed the Department of Education school security grant and equipment list, noting eligible items (security vestibules, detection systems, fencing, cameras and other hardware) and that the maximum award is $250,000 with a 25% local match requirement ($62,500). The board approved applying for that grant as well.
Separately, Mr. Ledge presented an SRO MOU with the county sheriff to outline responsibilities of the division, the sheriff's department and the school resource officer to promote a positive and safe school climate; the board approved the MOU.
Board discussion acknowledged the challenges of staffing and sustainability in small divisions and expressed support for pursuing outside funding to bolster safety capacity.
