Board approves application to VDOE grant to fund a pilot AP computer science course

Dr. Brown requested board approval to apply for the Virginia Department of Education's Advancing Computer Science Education Grant, saying the division will pursue option D of the RFP to design a plan to expand access to AP Computer Science at the high school.
"Through this grant, we could be awarded up to $20,000 to design a plan and initiatives that will expand access to AP computer science courses for students at the high school level," Dr. Brown said, adding that the application deadline is Sept. 8 and awards will be announced in October. He told the board the grant would fund professional development, curriculum resources, teacher preparation (including summer institutes), student recruitment and AP exam preparation supports.
Staff said they already have an interested qualified teacher and administrative buy-in; the division intends to integrate the course with existing STEM/CT programs and consider sustainability in master scheduling and recruiting additional qualified teachers. Board members expressed support and asked whether the course would count as math or science; presenters said it would be an elective that can count for science in some contexts.
The board moved and approved the request to apply. If awarded, ACS plans to implement grant-funded planning from October through June 2026 and launch the AP course the following school year.
