Council adds townhouses as a permitted use in R3 residential district

Appomattox — The town council voted to amend Chapter 36 of the town code to allow townhouses for sale as a permitted use in the R3 general residential district, attaching density, lot-area and setback standards.
The council cited the comprehensive plan’s emphasis on alternative housing types and noted developer interest. “During the comp plan, we heard a lot about alternative housing and other options,” the Mayor (Chair) said in explaining the change; the planning commission had reviewed the ordinance and recommended forwarding it to council. A local realtor spoke in support during the planning process.
Council members discussed the distinction between the townhouses proposed for sale and existing multifamily apartments, and said the amendment is intended to broaden homeownership options and housing diversity in town. The motion to approve carried by voice vote.
