Council accepts $15,000 AARP Community Challenge grant for five pickleball courts

Callie Arnold told the council Hillsborough was awarded a $15,000 AARP Community Challenge grant to support installation of five pickleball courts. Arnold said the national competition drew about 5,100 applications and the city was selected; she described substantial private donations and foundation support already committed to the project.
"This is a national grant... we were selected out of 5,100 applications," Arnold said. She reported private donations totaling nearly $25,400 and said the Hillsborough Community Foundation has awarded up to $11,800; the Hillsborough Recreation Commission (HRC) has also pledged matching funds. With the AARP award the presenter said committed funding stands at approximately $72,200 and additional contributions are expected.
Council asked about grant terms and deliverables; Arnold said the city's attorney reviewed the agreement and some deliverables were adjusted with AARP approval. After a motion and second, the council voted to accept the grant and authorized the mayor to sign the agreement. Staff and volunteers will continue fundraising to cover estimated project costs (presenters estimated total project cost near $100,000–$120,000, depending on whether concrete work is contracted).
