Bassett Unified officially welcomes new superintendent Dr. Anthony Ortiz

The Bassett Unified School District Board of Education formally welcomed Dr. Anthony Ortiz as the district’s new superintendent at its July 21 meeting, with elected‑official representatives and community partners on hand to present certificates and offer congratulations.

Dr. Ortiz thanked the board and community and described his approach to leadership at his first board meeting. "It's an honor to be here tonight, my first board meeting," he said, and asked the board and district staff to join him in focusing on student outcomes. The board presented a ceremonial medallion and invited community and legislative representatives to offer brief remarks.

Representatives from the offices of state and federal lawmakers and the county praised Ortiz's selection and expressed a willingness to partner on programs. A county supervisor's representative said the supervisor's office looks forward to continuing initiatives such as laptop distribution and other community partnerships.

Adriana Martinez Ortiz, introduced herself as Dr. Ortiz's wife and thanked the board on the family’s behalf. "We are deeply honored by the trust you have placed in him," she said, calling his commitment to students and families a guiding principle.

The board used the occasion to note upcoming leadership events the superintendent will help lead. Dr. Ortiz previewed a district leadership symposium July 29–31 and an August 17 welcome‑back event for staff, and thanked custodial and support staff for preparing Vassar High School to host the meeting. The board recessed briefly for photos and community refreshments after the recognitions.
