Long Beach board ratifies resolution opposing bills that would shift harbor control to Secretary of State

The Board ratified a resolution opposing two state-level bills—Senate Bill 2381 and House Bill 1480—that members said would transfer authority over municipal harbors and tidelands to the Secretary of State. "This bill would divest Long Beach of its Authority and right to control and manage its own Harbor," Alderman Frasier said, adding the change could "infringe upon the city's ability to conduct Commerce and raise tax revenue."
Officials described the bills as companion measures that would centralize management of harbor/tideland development and cited ongoing local efforts to rebuild and control the harbor after FEMA work. The Board voted to send the resolution to the city's delegation and to coastal counties including Perry, George and Pearl River.
The resolution was ratified with a motion and carry; members said they want citizens and the delegation to understand the potential local impacts if the bills pass.
