The Mayor announced that Long Beach will start a $3.5 million construction project to replace railroad crossings at Nicholson Avenue, Beach Park and Richards beginning March 3, with each crossing expected to take two to three weeks. "We're talking about a $3.5 million job on March the 3 will'll begin our construction of our new railroad crossings," the Mayor said, adding the city worked with CSX and multiple contractors to advance the work.
City staff said work at each crossing will be staged so only one crossing is closed at a time, and the scope includes new crossing arms, warning signals and signage. The Mayor said the project will be followed by paving work on Railroad Street to smooth grades and approaches, and that the improvements aim to meet state requirements and improve safety and freight/boat traffic access.
City officials credited multiple administrations and local staff for advancing the project and said public notices will be issued as closure dates approach. "We will be putting out information when we get closer to when things will be absolutely shut down at different crossings," the Mayor said. The city did not set specific dates for individual lane closures in the meeting; staff said they will notify the public with timelines and detour guidance closer to construction start.
