"I officially recommend that you deny the USD 2 18 petition to leave the High Plains educational co op," he said, and warned the district's assessment could rise by "almost $90,000 for next year" if the petition succeeds.
Board members discussed the statutory process and KSDE fact-finding, including whether Elkhart could meet IEP obligations if it separates. Dr. Myers noted that if Elkhart fails to get the needed 12 of 17 member votes, KSDE legal counsel would conduct on-site fact-finding in western Kansas.
A motion to deny supporting the petition was moved and seconded; the board voted and the motion carried. The board's vote will be transmitted to High Plains leadership as part of the cooperative's membership tally. The matter will next be considered by the cooperative membership and—if it advances—by the State Board of Education.
