The county’s EMA representative asked commissioners to consider increasing the communications/repairs budget and to plan for replacing aging tornado sirens if an outside grant does not come through. The EMA official told the board that the vendor price for replacement sirens is roughly $17,000 each and suggested a multi-year approach (three sirens a year) to replace the 20 units identified as needing updates.
The speaker described recent service interruptions (dispatch internet outages) and outlined radio-frequency infrastructure work planned at the EB Road tower to improve paging and siren operations. He said the county has a backup capability tied to radio repeaters and that a tower-company upgrade of coax and antennas is scheduled to reduce vulnerabilities. Commissioners thanked the EMA representative and indicated the personnel committee will see any requested pay adjustments for EMA staff.
