The Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend a text amendment creating a new agricultural zoning category in Basehor's zoning code. Planning and zoning director Jim Shurm told the commission the draft defines farm uses (including dairy and poultry), sets size thresholds and limits on accessory buildings, and establishes setbacks intended to protect nearby residential properties.
Shurm said the goal is to "better help those landowners use their property once they're annexed in." He emphasized existing farms would remain lawful nonconforming uses and would not be required to change current operations unless they modify their use. During public comment, residents sought clarification on how specific parcels would be affected and whether an appendix would list permitted activities; one resident asked, "how does this new agricultural zoning affect per 150 acres off of State Avenue?" After discussion, the commission moved and voted to recommend the amendment to city council (recorded as 7–0).
