Basehor students present petition, tell council KDOT may lower State Avenue speed

Four Linwood Innovation Academy students presented a petition and outreach campaign to the Basehor City Council seeking a lower speed limit on State Avenue.
Deputy City Administrator Maddie Bowden introduced the students before they described their work. "At the start of the petition, it had about 400 within the first week," said Nate Martin, one of the student presenters, who said the team later added about 183 signatures after expanded outreach. The students showed what they described as KDOT data marking 155th as a critical zone and said they placed petition materials at several local businesses to increase visibility.
A student presenter said the group met with Representative Tim Johnson and KDOT engineers. According to the students, an email from Representative Johnson indicated he and a senator had met with KDOT staff and "he strongly suggests that they are going to change the speed limit," and that KDOT might cover sign replacement costs. Deputy Administrator Bowden told the council the city has worked with the students to create learning opportunities and supported their outreach.
The students asked the council to continue supporting communication with KDOT and state representatives as the petition proceeds. They closed by thanking the council for its time and said they will provide follow-up information on petition totals and next steps.
