Council approves updates to city permit fees

Planning and Zoning Director Jim Schirmen presented a comprehensive review of building-permit fees and recommended new and adjusted charges. Schirmen said the city previously had some permit categories that lacked specific fees (for example, pools were lumped into general valuation categories) and that the proposed schedule better reflects staff time and peer jurisdictions.
"We proposed adding these new fees and adjusting and breaking them up to be a little more comprehensive," Schirmen said. He noted one example where the existing deck fee of $26 did not cover a single field visit and plan review cycle. Council members thanked staff for benchmarking and agreed to adopt the resolution. Council member (speaker 6) moved to approve Resolution 2025-204; the motion was seconded and the council approved the resolution 5-0.
Staff said the fee changes aim to recover costs associated with inspections and plan review and to bring Basehor's fees into alignment with regional peers. The resolution will be reflected in the city’s permit schedule going forward.
