"I would have liked to have known that, they might have been, given privy to speak to this development proposal," Commissioner Ben Hughes said, noting that the project is close to residential areas north of 104th even if the immediate site is commercial. The commissioner said he would support the planning commission recommendation but wanted staff to consider broader notice in future cases.
City staff clarified how the land development code sets a minimum notice radius. "The land development code contains the stipulation or the requirements for public notification," a staff member said, and later the city's notice coordinator, Frank, added: "I bonafide, like, go through a procedure, and I definitely do 500 feet, not the minimum requirement, which is 300 feet to capture more residents who can have an opportunity to opine on the proposals." Frank also noted budget limits for mailed notice and said expanding the radius beyond the city's current practice would require council action or budget changes.
