Cyclists and commissioners press Metro for protected bike lanes, separated facilities

During the Metro briefing the commission and local cyclists pressed Metro and city staff for more robust protections for cyclists than green paint alone.
One commissioner and a frequent rider urged Metro to consider low‑profile concrete or rubber separators used in Long Beach and other cities, arguing that paint alone allows drivers to drift into bike lanes and offers little deterrent to dangerous behavior. Metro's project manager Lourdes Christie said barrier types are a scoping/design question and encouraged participants to provide comments during circulation so alternatives can be evaluated in design.
"That's important feedback I can take back to the team for consideration," Christie said, acknowledging cyclists' safety concerns and noting that protected options can be evaluated during the design phase. Commissioners also asked about eliminating certain free right turns and adding signal and ramp improvements intended to improve pedestrian safety while balancing traffic flow.
The commission did not take a policy vote; Metro said it will consider the feedback in design and urged stakeholders to submit formal comments during the upcoming 45‑day circulation.
