Tucker County Schools received a federal 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant that will fund a new K–8 after‑school initiative called "Whole You," the presenter told the board. The presenter said the district competed with 15 applicants and was one of seven fully funded programs statewide; the application finished third in ranking and was the only newly funded program in the state. The award supports meals, small‑group instruction, enrichment rotations and family engagement activities for K–8 students identified in a local needs survey of 212 parents, staff and community members.
Program details presented to the board include a daily schedule with a 3:10–3:30 meal followed by a 3:30–4:30 small‑group instruction and enrichment block; the presenter said the program will use EXL and Accelerated Reader licenses, and that National Youth Science Academy staff will deliver STEM kits and semester field experiences. The presenter reported 63 K–8 participants in the program's first week, with 26 at Davis Thomas, and noted transportation limits at that site are constraining enrollment.
Next steps identified by staff include mandatory parent orientation sessions (Oct. 15 at Tucker Valley; Oct. 17 at Davis Thomas), a community information night tied to the national After School Alliance on Oct. 24, and an on‑site state review scheduled for Oct. 29. Staff also outlined federal reporting and data‑entry requirements that will be part of ongoing grant compliance.
