Planner urges Selectboard to back VTrans sidewalk grant for South Windsor Street

Brian Kobelick, a planner with the regional commission, told the Selectboard the VTrans small-scale bike-and-pedestrian grant is a construction-only award that requires a 50% local match and is appropriate for short, targeted sidewalk projects such as filling a 17-foot curb-cut gap by the school. Kobelick gave a rough cost estimate for new sidewalks of about $500 per linear foot and said that a 17-foot segment would total about $8,500.
Board members discussed the town's available reserves, including a $25,000 Alexander fund principal that previously had been used for sidewalks, and the Betterment Fund. Committee member (speaker 4) moved that the board support applying for the grant and the board set a working target to identify approximately $25,000 in local match to maximize the state's 50% match. "The grant application is due on July 11," Kobelick said, and he offered to coordinate with town staff to complete the application if the board confirms a match amount.
