Board declares Middlebrook Cemetery surplus to allow consideration of historic designation

The board voted to declare the Middlebrook cemetery surplus property so the Board of Supervisors can consider a community request to designate the site as historic. Staff recounted that Middlebrook School No. 6 closed in 1926 and that an adjacent cemetery, originally associated with Middlebrook Union Church from the 1800s, was not sold and therefore remained in the school divisions ownership. "So, as such, you are now the owners of the Middlebrook cemetery," staff said while recommending surplus designation.
A board member moved to declare the cemetery surplus and the motion was seconded; the motion carried by voice vote, recorded as six in favor. Board members discussed that declaring the property surplus would allow the Board of Supervisors to deed or otherwise handle preservation requests from community stakeholders.
