Council approves fireworks permit and waives fee for Bub Rothgeb

The Belle Plaine City Council on May 20 unanimously approved a fireworks permit for longtime pyrotechnician Bub Rothgeb and waived his 2026 permit fee. Bub told the council he has run fireworks shows for three decades, will operate a single stand on Washington and plans to donate proceeds to the Jr. League scholarship fund.
"I have been doing fireworks for 30 years," Bub said while presenting his permit and proof of insurance to the council. Councilmember Bryan Nolan moved to approve the permit and waive the fee; Dave Armstrong seconded the motion and the vote was 5-0 in favor. The council recorded no nays.
The permit approval included staff confirmation that Rothgeb presented the required insurance. The council did not attach additional conditions to the permit. The council handled the item during New Business after amendments to the agenda added the request.
