The Washington County Council met Dec. 2, 2024, at the Washington County Courthouse in Salem and approved a series of routine actions and budget moves, including a $255,000 additional appropriation to purchase new highway trucks.
Councilmember Preston Shell moved to approve the appropriation from the Local Road & Street Fund (1169) in the amount of $255,000 to pay for new highway trucks; the motion was seconded by Councilmember Gerald Fleming and passed. The council also approved the 2025 council meeting schedule and authorized the auditor's office to make necessary transfers to balance year‑end line items.
The council approved proceeding with a Code‑Red emergency notification contract that the county would need to fund at approximately $14,000–$15,000. Earlier in the meeting EMA Director Deni Stempowski had outlined a grant reduction affecting the department’s reimbursement; the council agreed to table a separate request to convert the EMA position to full time until January pending further information.
The meeting concluded after councilmembers handled a set of administrative items, including a salary title change in the highway department and the formal appointment of Keeley Stingel to the Health Board.
