County council and commissioners hold multi-day 2025 budget hearings; council records line-item cuts and a consensus on an 8% salary increase

The Washington County Council and the Board of Commissioners convened August 21–22 for multi-day hearings on the 2025 proposed budget. Council members met with a broad set of departments (Veterans Affairs, Circuit Court, Public Defender, Sheriff, 911/Emergency Management, Health, Park & Recreation, Economic Growth Partnership, and others) to review requests, staffing, and program needs. Council President Mark Abbott called the council to order and the sessions included department presentations and line-item reviews.

After department hearings the council made multiple adjustments to the proposed budget. Notable changes recorded in the minutes include reductions in election AVM mechanics, changes to assessor and auditor certification and travel lines, reductions in pauper-attorney funding, and a transfer of $10,000 from Extension equipment to the CEDIT fund. The council increased CEDIT economic growth funding from $20,000 to $40,000 and adjusted non-paving CEDIT funds. The minutes state, "The consensus of the council is to grant an 8% salary increase unless otherwise stated above." The council reminded departments and the public that changes may be made up until formal adoption on Oct. 7, 2024.
