The Washington County Board of Commissioners voted to name Bridge 88-00238 on South Main Street the "Washington County Veterans Memorial Bridge" and authorized a resolution to be submitted to the state for approval. Veterans Service Officer Andrew Bush, who has coordinated with local donors and state representatives, said the committee intends to hold a dedication on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2024.
Attorney April Geltmaker was tasked with preparing the formal resolution for state submission, and Mr. Bush will report back with a detailed itinerary at the Sept. 16 commissioners meeting. Commissioner Rick Roberts moved to approve the naming resolution and Commissioner Todd Ewen seconded; the motion passed. The minutes record that Walmart and local donors will contribute supplies and a stage trailer will be provided by Temple and Temple for speakers and ceremony logistics.
The dedication planning also prompted a related policy question: Mr. Bush asked whether the county's longstanding $100 one-time contribution for veterans markers could be paid again to replace damaged markers. Commissioner Ewen directed Mr. Bush to discuss that request with the County Council during upcoming budget hearings.
