The board approved a voucher for Batten Systems to develop an underwater wireless charging system and associated data-transfer capability for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs).
Staff (S2) described Batten as a firm that develops AUVs and has tested products in military exercises with defense organizations. A company representative (S7) said the wireless charger will allow vessels to autonomously navigate to charging ports and download collected data over repeated missions; "We're Batten Systems," the presenter said.
Board members praised the company's growth and local ties; one board member noted Batten's membership in the Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce and the company's relocation history within the region. The voucher motion was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
