The board approved a knowledge‑provider innovation voucher for Lenox Medical of Bristol to fund further research and development of the OsseoPearl vertebral body augmentation system, an implant intended to both repair spinal fractures and deliver therapeutics to treat underlying osteoporosis.
Dom Messerli, president and CEO of Lenox, described the device as an implant of natural bone that can be loaded with drugs to address osteoporosis at the fracture site. Messerli said, “we treat the fracture and then also the underlying disease of osteoporosis,” explaining the company’s goal to move from proof of concept to translational research. Board members asked clinical and regulatory questions about indications and whether the device would treat disc or nerve-related conditions; Messerli said the device targets the vertebral body, not the disc. The voucher was approved; the transcript records one abstention on the vote.
