Council member urges staff training, layered defenses after cyber concerns

A council participant identified as Robert told the meeting that cybersecurity begins with people and proposed training for officials as the first of seven layers in a defensive strategy.
"So, I have to do these trainings once every 6 months ... So that's 1 of the things that I think will be very beneficial is if we get a little bit of training on that for all of us," Robert said, stressing the importance of staff awareness about suspicious emails and links. He also noted the city lacks strong firewalls beyond basic network address translation and recommended reviewing encryption and configuration before sharing data over Office 365.
Robert warned of incidents in other cities where livestream accounts were compromised and overlays were posted during meetings; he urged the city to get a security assessment to "make sure that we meet or exceed recommendations." The mayor thanked Robert for bringing his experience to the table and reiterated that the city hired external expertise to do the technical work.
