County staff explain tax refund after DOR misassigned house to wrong parcel
Summary
Prairie County staff described a Department of Revenue re-evaluation that corrected a house-and-garage misassignment; one parcel rose by $622, the other fell by $795, producing a $172.69 net difference and triggering an $86 refund to the taxpayer for overlapping payments.

A staff member (S5) told commissioners that the Department of Revenue had put a house and garage on the wrong parcel, then re-evaluated both parcels. "The one where the house is accurately attached to now went up by $622 for the year. The one that had the house removed went down by $795. So it'd be a difference of a $172.69," the staff member said, and explained the office would reverse the original payment, create a corrected bill, and issue an $86 refund to the taxpayer.
Staff described procedural steps: because the payments and the reassessment occurred in the same month, the treasurer's office can reverse the transaction, issue the corrected bill, and include the refund in the next month’s check run. Commissioners discussed whether the parcels should be combined in the system (the staff said they will remain separate unless the property owner requests consolidation with DOR).
