District reviews K-12 "Mastery 10" science standards to guarantee core learning outcomes

Morgan Brown, director of elementary, and Jenny Leonard, assistant director of secondary education, walked the board through the district's K-12 "Mastery 10" science standards. The plan identifies 10 mastery standards at each grade level or course that the district will prioritize to guarantee a viable curriculum across buildings.
"So mastery means all students will master, with a 100% proficiency of meaning all students," Jenny Leonard said, explaining that mastery standards are selected as non-negotiable outcomes while other standards remain taught as supporting material. Presenters described a collaborative selection process that began in fall 2024 and included staff input, PLC discussions and district curriculum committees.
They said the mastery standards are intended to provide clarity for teachers, increase consistency across buildings, and focus professional learning time on depth of instruction. Morgan Brown said the district will collect ongoing feedback during professional learning days and use PLCs to monitor mastery and identify gaps.
The presenters indicated that social studies mastery standards and specialty-area standards will be the next subjects brought forward for board review.
