Florence hires Dewan Stapleton as full-time police officer; board recognizes retiring Officer John Denton

During an executive session called at 6:45 p.m., the Florence Mayor and Board voted to hire Dewan Stapleton as a full-time police officer at a starting rate of $21.06 per hour, effective Aug. 20, 2025, contingent on a successful background check and drug and alcohol testing. The hire was moved by Alderman Brian Grantham, seconded by Alderman Mason Herrin, and recorded votes list Aldermen John Banks, Brian Grantham, Mason Herrin, Kyle Martin and Brent Sistrunk as "Aye." The board returned to open session at 6:50 p.m.
Separately, the board recognized the retirement of Officer John Denton and, citing Section 45-9-191 of the Mississippi Code of 1972, established a value of $1.00 for a Glock 17 (serial # BHBU266) formerly issued by the city and approved Denton's purchase of the sidearm for $1.00. The motion to implement the purchase offer carried unanimously.
