Committee members discussed likely annexations that could add an estimated 1,500 residents over the next decade and the financial implications for service delivery. One member said annexations "might be... another 1,500 residents," and urged the committee to plan for services and community spaces accordingly.
The group debated rezoning parts of downtown for walkable retail versus expanding light industrial areas that can generate jobs and tax revenue more quickly. Several members warned that the highway running through town constrains downtown walkability and that rezoning carries tradeoffs for existing residential stock. "If you want to shift that wedge more quickly, then light industrial is a more positive response," S5 said; others argued for protecting the downtown core and considering incremental, long-term changes.
Staff announced a town hall on the 16th to discuss development standards and asked members to continue refining goals and objectives in the comprehensive-plan review process.
