Council approves interagency MOU to streamline marshals and sheriff investigations

The Bellevue council voted on Oct. 14 to approve a memorandum of understanding between the Bellevue Marshal's Office and the Blaine County sheriff intended to streamline responses and investigative coordination across jurisdictions.
Curtis Gaston of the marshal's office said the MOU clarifies why marshals may respond out of town when they are the closest unit and reduces duplication during investigations that cross jurisdictional lines. "This MOU ... will speed up response times and streamline investigative processes," Gaston said. He emphasized the agreement does not exchange powers: "It doesn't exchange powers... it simply helps us work together more efficiently."
Council members asked about historical precedent for such an agreement and whether the MOU would provide access to a new mental-health deputy; marshal's office representatives confirmed it would improve access to that deputy when assigned. After a motion and second, council approved Resolution 25-29; the meeting record shows the motion passed and the mayor and council thanked the marshal for bringing the item forward.
