Council advances Charter Review Commission nominations for multiple wards

Staff introduced Resolution 26-27 to form the third Charter Review Commission and explained the nomination process and timeline, including an August 3 meeting to refine nominations. The mayor may nominate one additional candidate above the ward nominations, and wards with four or fewer applicants did not need to act tonight.
Ward 1 nominations advanced to the next stage: Brian Mills, Jared Ehlenberger, Kenya Campbell and Tabitha Baker were named by ward council members. Councilors discussed potential conflicts of interest related to a nominee and concluded the nominations could move forward; staff confirmed that those ward nominations will be finalized at follow-up meetings. Ward 2 nominees presented were Ruth Johnson, Thomas Serco, Joseph William Burke III and Michelle Parker.
Staff explained the August 3 meeting will allow wards to narrow lists and that final appointments will be approved in a subsequent regular council meeting. Staff also described past commission timelines and said the Commission's meetings are public and will be supported by staff and the city clerk. No final appointments were made at the work session; staff said the nomination process will continue per the published calendar.
