Apache Junction public-art program advances; roundabout design artist selected and $640,000 budget noted

Erica Hernandez, a city planner, updated the council on the Public Art and Public Places program, reviewing completed pieces and in-progress projects funded through a private-development art fee collected at building permits. Hernandez said the program's current budget is nearly $640,000 and staff plans to use a large portion of those funds for the roundabout project.
Hernandez listed completed work (library banners, a 350-foot verge mural, dog sculptures at Dutchman Dog Park, window wraps and wrapped traffic cabinets) and said the artist roster selection resulted in 33 of 39 applicants being included. She said Karen Yank was chosen to design the roundabout from 113 applicants and an initial design is expected in September with installation targeted for fall next year. Councilmembers discussed the possibility of relocating a longtime monument to a more visible downtown location and whether a particular sign might make sense as a roundabout centerpiece as the city advances downtown branding.
Hernandez said staff is working with public works and IT on a professional-services agreement for traffic-cabinet wraps and that the public-art program now has a dedicated email for inquiries. No formal procurement decision beyond the RFQ selection was made tonight; staff will return with design details and schedules.
