Mazomanie Plan Commission hears Heights Community Garden request; neighbors ask plots be moved

The Mazomanie Plan Commission on June 8 heard a Conditional Use Permit request from the Heights Community Garden Group to establish a community garden at the intersection of E. Fourth Street and State Street. Chair Natalie Beil opened the item and Marcia Miquelon described staked-out locations for the garden.
Miquelon told the Commission that, because of the site’s floodplain, the garden shed would need to be placed at the highest elevation on the property, west of 106 E. Fourth Street, while an open-air shelter could be located elsewhere on the parcel. Residents in attendance urged moving the individual garden plots to the north end of the property to preserve existing green space. The minutes record that neighbors and the garden group agreed to collaborate to relocate plots further north in advance of the Commission’s June 15 meeting. No formal action was taken on the Conditional Use Permit at the June 8 meeting.
Attendees also raised operational concerns, including ongoing maintenance of the garden, the potential to attract pollinators and bees, odors from composting, and the prospect of increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic along that corridor of the village. Those concerns informed the decision to seek a revised layout before the Commission’s next meeting.
Procedural motions at the start and end of the meeting were handled separately; the Commission approved the agenda and the April 6, 2026 minutes and adjourned at 5:49 p.m. The Heights Community Garden Group is expected to deliver a revised site plan addressing residents’ concerns for consideration on June 15, 2026.
