AJPD renews partnerships with state task forces; city assigns officers and recoups majority of salary costs

Lieutenant Tom Parker briefed the council on three police interagency agreements the department recommends renewing: the Arizona Vehicle Theft Task Force (VTTF), the GAIN immigration intelligence team enforcement (referred to as GETM), and the Arizona Child Abduction and Response Team (CART).
Parker described the units as statewide, multi-agency efforts led by the Arizona Department of Public Safety that expand local investigative capacity for vehicle theft, suspected human-smuggling / GAIN-related activity, and child-abduction response. "We have 1 officer that's assigned to the vehicle theft task force and 1 officer that's assigned to GETM," Parker said, adding the assignments provide subject-matter expertise for local crimes and that about "75% of their salary actually comes back to the city." He said the arrangements save taxpayer dollars while increasing investigative reach.
Council members asked whether officers work locally or are deployed across the state; Parker responded that the officers are the city's subject-matter experts and are deployed where needs appear but still help resolve crimes linked to Apache Junction. The renewals will be placed on the Aug. 4 consent agenda for formal approval.
