Police present DUI Abatement Grant; AJPD reports 155 DUI arrests so far this year

Sergeant Edward McGuire of the Apache Junction Police Department's traffic unit presented the DUI Abatement Council Grant to the council and recommended the city accept the funding that reimburses overtime through the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.
McGuire said the department has increased DUI detection and enforcement and provided local statistics: "So far this year, AJPD officers have made 155 DUI arrests," he said, noting there were 175 DUI arrests in all of 2025. McGuire added that impairment was a factor in six fatal collisions within Apache Junction in 2025. Councilmembers asked about the proportion of enforcement overtime the grant covers; staff said the grant is a fraction of total enforcement costs and the Governor's Office has provided multiple grants historically, sometimes totaling over $100,000 per year.
There was no final vote recorded on acceptance during the meeting; staff recommended acceptance and indicated they would return the grant for a formal council action or include it on a consent agenda as appropriate.
