The council discussed fireworks policy for the July 24 date and, citing fire-safety criteria and regional coordination, moved to restrict personal fireworks on that date while supporting a managed county show over Utah Lake.
The mayor told the council the State Forester had approved the local ban criteria and listed neighboring cities that have taken similar steps. The mayor also reported Highland donated $3,000 toward a coordinated county fireworks show to provide a single, controlled celebration. "We donated, $3,000 so that it was less than what the other cities are doing," the mayor said.
Council members asked for assurance the ban would be reassessed next year so it does not become a default permanent policy. Staff said the decision was made with the fire chief and emphasized ongoing reassessment of conditions and the state's role in future direction.
