IT staff says AI governance work is coming; no timeline set
Summary
IT staff told the board that work on AI governance will begin but that no timeline is set; staff said there are currently no controls preventing incidental employee use of AI tools and invited input from board members.
Greg Viness told the board staff will begin looking at AI governance and asked members to email ideas or questions.
"He wants to let you guys know that we also be working on... AI governance. So how to handle and control, mitigate all the risks that come with that," Greg said, adding there was currently "no timeline" but that staff wanted to be proactive. He also told the board "As of right now there's nothing in place that's preventing anybody from using it."
Board members said the topic felt pressing and asked whether it would appear on the agenda in the near term; Greg said he had not heard of active department requests yet and could not provide a schedule but encouraged members to submit suggestions to Chris. The board did not take action on AI governance at this meeting.
