164 students left in limbo as PACE Center delay pushes opening to January 2027

A council member told the mayor that 164 students were already enrolled for the fall semester and asked what the next steps would be for those students and their families. Mayor Maher said Portsmouth Public Schools are working closely with the students and parents to find alternatives and keep students connected to programs while the PACE Center opening is delayed.
Maher suggested temporary partnerships with local businesses and health systems, including local shipyard employers and hospitals such as Bon Secours, for hands-on training and placements. “We are going to deliver,” he said, adding that maintaining student engagement is a priority and that the city and schools expect to have the doors open in January 2027.
