Crockett's police chief presented options July 20 to address an aging vehicle fleet, including a leasing scenario that would replace the entire fleet and add two vehicles.
"If we were to replace our entire fleet, our first-year cost would be a $182,000. That would get us 13 brand new vehicles," the police chief said, explaining the lease terms and noting enterprise would return equity to the city at lease end. The chief said subsequent years could cost about $266,320 per year, and warned that if the city committed only to a partial replacement the aging of remaining vehicles would continue to create maintenance costs.
Council members discussed alternatives, including replacing roughly two vehicles per year to keep the fleet under a six-year average age and reduce long-term maintenance burdens. Staff emphasized that any large lease commitment would create predictable annual obligations and would need to be accounted for in future budget workshops.
Council gave staff direction to include vehicle-replacement options in the draft budget materials for the August review.
