Councilmembers pledge Preston’s support for Bear River Massacre historic site

At its Feb. 9 meeting the Preston City Council heard from council members and staff who attended the Bear River Massacre commemoration and offered city support for development of the historic site.
Mayor Dan Keller called the Feb. 9 Preston City Council meeting to order. During opening remarks, Councilmember Todd Thomas and Shawn Oliverson, Director of City Planning and Land Use, reported attending the Bear River Massacre Commemoration on Jan. 29 and said they would support development of the historic site in Preston.
Councilmember Todd Thomas relayed the commemoration’s elements, saying Tribal Vice-Chairman Brad Parry of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation “gave a detailed presentation on the events of the massacre.” The council did not take formal action on the site at this meeting; Thomas and Oliverson offered Preston City’s support and recommended continued coordination with tribal representatives and other stakeholders.
