Chief Van Gorder said the department will ask the Merit Commission to approve a lieutenant promotion process and reported that the commission had previously approved a captain promotion process. "We have 10 of our current firefighters going through that promotion process," Van Gorder said.
He also described a paramedic‑only hiring process: the department solicited candidates and received eight applicants and is conducting testing and interviews this week, hoping to return to the Merit Commission in August for certification of the hiring list. Van Gorder said the department may hire up to four people from the paramedic list next year to help fill vacancies and projected retirements.
Why it matters: promotion and paramedic hiring are key levers to fill vacancies and improve operational capacity ahead of station openings; Merit Commission action and certification are required steps before hires are finalized.
