Elementary staff spotlighted UFLI reading, P.E. Rocket Marathon and new electives
Summary
Board heard that elementary teachers are using the UFLI reading program with K–3 students, Title I is supporting leveled instruction, Mr. Posten is leading a Rocket Marathon P.E. program and grades 4–6 now have elective choices.
The board received a series of elementary-focused updates during the staff spotlight section. Teachers reported using the UFLI reading program in whole- and small-group instruction for grades K–3; three elementary teachers are attending Reading Clinic courses at Eastern Oregon University as professional development.
Elementary P.E. teacher Mr. Posten described a Rocket Marathon initiative in which students collectively track running progress toward the distance of a marathon by year's end. District staff also reported Title I collaboration with classroom teachers for leveled reading and math groups. For grades 4—6, new elective offerings (Band, Cooking, Publications) were announced and music-class scheduling is structured to allow teacher support in other classrooms.
