Piper Laymon, chair of the Youth Council Task Force, told the City Commission that the council had advanced several youth-led projects and asked the commission to approve two actions: a local youth showcase festival on May 16, 2026, and a boater-safety awareness meeting. "We would like to propose a new youth showcase festival," Laymon said, noting the group had secured locations for three new lending libraries at Riverside Park, 27th Avenue Park and the NSB Sports Complex and planned to stock each with teen novels.
Commissioners voted to approve the youth showcase and the boater-safety outreach on the motion presented during the meeting. The youth council described its boater-safety work as coordinated with the mayor's office and the Coast Guard Auxiliary; Laymon said the council hopes to host an awareness meeting at New Smyrna Beach High School that could evolve into a boater-safety class. City staff and commissioners praised the students' engagement: city clerk Sharon Taylor Harding and other staff who supported the group were thanked during the presentation. The commission's approvals were recorded on the public roll call.
